English at The Hayfield School is central to providing all pupils with literacy skills, confidence and creativity required to succeed in all areas of the curriculum. As a core subject area we aim to provide enjoyable and challenging opportunities across three key stages.
Pupils will experience and study a vast range of novels, drama texts and poetry in their time at Hayfield, taking into account different genres and periods. They will become confident in their written communication in areas such as descriptive, persuasive and analytical writing. Recognition is given to the changing face of Language and the effects of Media and Technology on English in the world around us.
Pupils will be given an appreciation of the different contexts of spoken language and gain confidence in public speaking. Texts from different cultures provide pupils with insight into a variety of diverse traditions whilst a broad and balanced curriculum means that Shakespeare, pre-20th century texts, and the work of many contemporary writers are covered.
Our objective is to prepare all of our pupils for life in the modern world by ensuring they are equipped to:
- Meet the demands of the GCSE specifications by reading increasingly challenging material independently
- Read critically and analytically
- Write accurately, fluently and to create a specific effect
- Plan, draft, edit and proof-read
- Consolidate and build on their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary from Key Stage 2
- Speak confidently, clearly and effectively
The programme of study across the key stage offers pupils a strong foundation in all areas of English Curriculum to engage, inspire and build upon existing skills. We aim to provide pupils with a curriculum which develops their own skills as writers and also encourages them to become aware of British values such as democracy and diversity; community and tolerance; and freedom and responsibility.
The schemes of learning have been designed to cover all areas of the new National Curriculum in KS3 through a wide range of engaging themes.
Year 7: Best of British, Survival, and Relationships.
Year 8: The Language of Warfare, Love and Tragedy, and Adventure and Exploration.
Year 9: School Days, Crime and Punishment, Fighting for Your Rights, and An Inspector Calls.
Doddle is used to track student performance across KS3. This along with an annual AQA Exam are used to regularly assess Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening to monitor pupil achievement and progress.
All pupils in KS4 work towards two GCSEs in their English lessons over a two-year period; English Language (AQA 8700) and English Literature (AQA 8702). Both qualifications are 100% exam. For Language, there are two papers with equal weighting: Paper 1 Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing and Paper 2 Writers’ Viewpoints and Perspectives. For Literature pupils study for Paper 1: Shakespeare (Macbeth) and the 19th Century (A Christmas Carol) Paper 2: Modern Texts (An Inspector Calls) and Poetry (Power and Conflict cluster). All of the texts will be available to purchase from school.
Through studying these courses, pupils are developing the skills they need to read, understand and analyse a wide range of different texts and write clearly; skills central to success in all of their GCSE subjects, as well as in a wide range of contexts outside of the classroom.

It is really important that pupils keep their set texts fresh through frequent revision. This will help them in their final exams, which are closed text for Literature. Taking responsibility for their revision will make achieving the final grade they really wanted even more rewarding. Remember that they can always speak to their teacher, or any member of the English Faculty, if they are in need of help.
